Tips & Guide

Why rates change constantly

Currency exchange rates fluctuate 24 hours a day based on supply and demand in the global forex market. Major factors include interest rate decisions by central banks, inflation data, trade balances, and geopolitical events. Weekend rates are typically set by Friday's close.

Mid-market vs bank rates

The rate shown here is the mid-market rate — the midpoint between buy and sell prices used by banks when trading with each other. Banks and money transfer services charge a margin on top, which is how they profit. Services like Wise often offer rates much closer to mid-market than traditional banks.

Understanding the Euro

The Euro (EUR) is used by 20 EU member states and is the world's second most traded currency. The ECB publishes official reference rates daily at around 16:00 Central European Time. Many non-EU countries also peg their currencies to the Euro.

Safe currency conversions when travelling

Avoid exchanging currency at airports — they typically offer the worst rates. ATM withdrawals in the local currency often give better rates than pre-exchanging cash. Notify your bank before travelling to avoid card blocks abroad.

Pegged currencies

Some currencies have fixed exchange rates pegged to another. The UAE Dirham (AED) is pegged to the USD at 3.6725. The Hong Kong Dollar (HKD) operates in a narrow band around 7.8 per USD. Pegged currencies barely move.

Data source

Exchange rates are sourced from the European Central Bank (ECB) via Frankfurter API and updated on every business day. Weekend and holiday rates reflect the last published business day close.

Frequently asked questions

Where do the exchange rates come from?

Rates are sourced from the European Central Bank (ECB) via the Frankfurter API. The ECB publishes official reference rates each business day at around 16:00 Central European Time. Weekend and public holiday rates reflect the most recent published business day. These are mid-market rates — the midpoint between buy and sell prices.

Why is the rate different from my bank or money transfer service?

Banks and money transfer companies add a margin on top of the mid-market rate — this is how they profit. The mid-market rate shown here is the 'real' rate that banks use when trading with each other; it is rarely offered to retail customers. Services such as Wise typically charge a small transparent fee and pass on rates very close to mid-market.

How often are the rates updated?

The ECB publishes rates once per business day. Rates are loaded when you open the converter and are current as of the last published business day. During weekends and bank holidays, the rates shown are from the previous Friday's close. If you need live intraday rates for trading, you will need a specialist financial data provider.

What currencies are available?

The converter includes 20 of the most widely traded world currencies by default: USD, EUR, GBP, JPY, CNY, CAD, AUD, CHF, HKD, SGD, INR, KRW, BRL, MXN, SEK, NOK, NZD, ZAR, TRY, and AED. Premium subscribers can add any additional currency supported by the ECB dataset.

What does 'Show all currencies' mean?

Clicking 'Show all currencies' converts your entered amount into every currency in the list simultaneously, so you can see the equivalent values side by side. This is useful when comparing prices across multiple countries or deciding which currency to exchange into before travelling.
