EU shoe sizes are based on Paris points, where each point equals 2/3 of a centimetre. Size 40 corresponds to a foot length of about 25.5 cm. EU sizing is gender-neutral and used across continental Europe.
UK sizes start from 0 and go up in thirds of an inch (barleycorns). Men's and women's UK sizes use the same scale, unlike the US system. India and parts of the Commonwealth also use UK sizing.
US women's sizes are approximately 1.5 to 2 sizes larger than men's for the same foot. A US Men's 8 is roughly equivalent to a US Women's 9.5. Always check whether a US size is men's or women's when shopping.
Japan measures foot size directly in centimetres, making it one of the most intuitive systems. JP 26 = a 26 cm foot. Half-sizes (e.g. 25.5) are common.
Korean shoe sizes are expressed in millimetres of foot length. KR 260 = a 26 cm foot. Like Japan, it is based on direct foot measurement and is very straightforward.
Stand on paper, trace your foot, and measure the longest point from heel to toe. Add 0.5β1 cm of room for comfort. Measure both feet β most people have one foot slightly larger β and use the larger measurement.

The Mondopoint system β used by NATO and some ski boot manufacturers β measures foot length and width directly in millimetres, making it the most precise and internationally consistent system. It is, however, rarely used in everyday retail.
