Tips & Guide

FOV and competitive play

Higher FOV lets you see more of the game world at once, but objects appear smaller and further away. Most competitive FPS players use 90-103 horizontal FOV on 16:9. Extremely high values (120+) can distort aim feel and make targets harder to hit at range.

Horizontal vs vertical FOV

Games define FOV differently. CS2 and Source games use vertical FOV (which is why 90 vFOV = ~106 hFOV on 16:9). Most modern games show horizontal FOV. When comparing across games, always convert to the same type first.

Ultrawide monitors and FOV

A 21:9 monitor gives you ~30% more horizontal peripheral vision than 16:9 at the same hFOV setting. However, many competitive games cap FOV or render the extra width as advantage detection zones — check whether your game supports ultrawide natively.

4:3 stretched in CS2

Many CS2 pros play on a 4:3 resolution stretched to 16:9. This does not change the underlying FOV calculation — it only stretches the image horizontally. The effective 4:3 native hFOV of ~74.6 is stretched to fill the 16:9 screen.

Use this when changing aspect ratio, display size, or game settings so your view stays comparable across setups. The result is a starting point, not a guarantee that every game uses the same FOV convention.

How to use the FOV Calculator

  1. Choose the game or FOV convention that matches the value you already know.
  2. Enter your current horizontal or vertical FOV and select the target aspect ratio.
  3. Compare the converted value with the in-game setting, then test it in a practice range before changing ranked or competitive settings.

Examples

When switching displays

Convert a 16:9 setup to an ultrawide target, then verify the game does not apply its own horizontal-to-vertical multiplier.

There is no single universal FOV number: games may measure horizontal, vertical, or even a diagonal field of view. Always use the convention shown by the game or calculator.

Frequently asked questions

What FOV should I use for competitive FPS?

Most competitive players use 90–103 horizontal FOV on 16:9. CS2 locks vertical FOV at 90 (106 horizontal). Valorant is capped at 103. Experiment within those ranges — the right FOV is one where you feel aware of your surroundings without aiming feeling floaty.

Why does changing aspect ratio change my FOV feel?

Your eyes are calibrated to an expected real-world angle of view. A 90 hFOV on a 21:9 monitor looks and feels different to 90 hFOV on 4:3 because the physical screen angle to your eyes differs. Use this calculator to match the feel across rigs.

What is the difference between Hor+, Vert-, and scaling types?

Hor+ (horizontal plus) means wider screens get more horizontal vision at the same vFOV setting — the most player-friendly approach. Vert- means widescreen players see less vertically. Most modern games use Hor+ scaling.

How do I match my FOV when switching games?

Find the horizontal FOV in your source game (use this calculator to convert if needed), then enter that hFOV as the target in your new game. The cm/360 sensitivity tool handles mouse feel; this tool handles visual feel.
